Buy Box

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

The Buy Box — formally the Featured Offer — is the buyable offer on a product detail page: the box with Add to Cart and Buy Now. On listings with multiple sellers, Amazon rotates the box among eligible offers, weighing total price, fulfilment speed, and seller performance. The share of time you hold it is your Buy Box percentage, and it decides most of your revenue.

What is Buy Box?

The Buy Box — formally the Featured Offer — is the buyable offer on a product detail page: the box with Add to Cart and Buy Now. On listings with multiple sellers, Amazon rotates the box among eligible offers, weighing total price, fulfilment speed, and seller performance. The share of time you hold it is your Buy Box percentage, and it decides most of your revenue.

The stakes, quantified: roughly 82% of desktop and 90%+ of mobile sales flow through the Featured Offer. Hold the box and the listing is your storefront; lose it and your own product page sells someone else’s inventory — while your Sponsored ads pause for want of an eligible offer. It is the single most consequential rotating asset on the platform.

How Amazon chooses the holder

The selection weighs: total price to door (item + shipping — a lower sticker with higher shipping loses), fulfilment method (FBA and Seller Fulfilled Prime hold structural advantage; standard merchant-fulfilled fights uphill), seller performance metrics (ODR, late-shipment and cancellation rates), in-stock reliability, and customer-service quality. It’s continuous and shared: closely-matched offers split the box by quality score, which is why Buy Box percentage is a dial, not a coin. Every factor is something you operate — the box is downstream of discipline.

Playing to keep it (the operating discipline)

Track Buy Box percentage daily per ASIN — it’s the earliest warning the listing gives. Price with rules, not emotions: repricers with floors beat panic matches; remember competitors’ floors are real too, and attrition is a strategy (let the unsustainable discounter bleed). Hold the fulfilment edge where economics allow — on competitive ASINs, FBA’s box-share and conversion lift pays its fees. Fix metric slips same-week (they move the box quietly). And never fund ads on a listing you’re not holding — that’s renting billboards for someone else’s store.

In practice

A brand’s hero ASIN shows Buy Box share sliding over a week: a reseller appeared 4% cheaper. Diagnosis first — the reseller is merchant-fulfilled with thin stock. The brand holds price (their FBA speed and metrics carry the rest of the score), deepens stock to signal reliability, and watches share settle at 78% while the discounter’s margin bleeds at their thin markup. Six weeks later the reseller is gone; share is 96%. The box was won by refusing to play the wrong game.

⚠️ Watch out. A seller chases a reseller’s price to the bottom, breaks their own margin floor, and discovers the reseller was a loss-leadering arbitrage account that restocks never. Both bled; only one had a business model that survived it. Price wars for the box are won by the participant with the best unit economics — know yours before the war starts.
💡 Harpy tip. Daily Buy Box share on your top ASINs, next to ACOS and sessions — the three numbers that gate everything else. When share dips, diagnose before discounting: price, metrics, stock, or a new competitor each have different correct responses.

Buy Box FAQ

What is the Amazon Buy Box?

The Featured Offer — the primary buyable offer on a detail page, rotated among sellers by price, fulfilment, and performance. Most sales flow through it.

How do I win the Buy Box more often?

Competitive total price, FBA/SFP fulfilment, strong metrics, reliable stock — managed continuously. Buy Box percentage is an operating metric, not a one-time prize.

What is Buy Box suppression?

When NO offer is featured (usually fair-pricing flags) — the buy buttons vanish, ads pause, conversion goes to zero until fixed. Found fast or expensively.
