Gated Product

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

A gated product is a brand, category, or item that Amazon lets only approved sellers list: the gate opens when you present evidence you can source it legitimately. Gating covers a broad range — big brands, groceries, health products, topicals, collectibles, anything Amazon judges high-risk.

What is Gated Product?

A gated product is a brand, category, or item that Amazon lets only approved sellers list: the gate opens when you present evidence you can source it legitimately. Gating covers a broad range — big brands, groceries, health products, topicals, collectibles, anything Amazon judges high-risk.

Amazon gates because counterfeiters and unsafe goods are the enemy of a marketplace built on buyer trust. For sellers, gating is a doorman with high standards: get through with proper documentation and you sell in a less crowded market with real demand; try to sneak past and you collect policy violations like stamps in a passport.

Getting ungated properly

The standard pathway: check Seller Central for the category/brand requirement (the exact documents requested vary — commonly invoices from authorised distributors, recent and matching your business details, sometimes brand authorisation letters). Then apply with documentation that actually satisfies the requirement — invoices from authorised suppliers, quantities that make sense for a real business, details matching your registered accounts. Brands often provide their own pathway too: a brand-direct authorisation letter or distributor arrangement can be the cleanest door. The waiting is usually short; the standard is high, and rightly so — approval numbers are deliberately not gameable.

The expensive way to lose (and stay lost)

Two failure modes. The first: sourcing a gated product before approval — inventory arrives, listings can’t go live, capital freezes in a warehouse while the appeal plays. The second, worse: bypassing the gate (listing a gated item under a miscategorised node, or selling from an unauthorised source) — those trigger policy violations against your account health, and repeat offences edge toward suspension. Gating is one of the few areas of Amazon where patience is literally the cheapest strategy: verify requirements, obtain documents, get approval, then buy stock — in that order, always.

In practice

A seller wants into a gated grocery brand. Instead of buying stock first (their instinct from the ungated world), they start with the paperwork: invoices from a distributor carrying the brand, business licences matching, and the application submitted before any purchase order. Approval lands in eight days; only then does the first purchase happen, sized to test demand. Two months later, the category is one of their better-margin lines — and they never once owned inventory they couldn’t sell.

⚠️ Watch out. A seller sees a gated brand selling well and sources 400 units through an unauthorised reseller, planning to “work out the approval later.” The application fails on invoice provenance; the stock is unsellable on Amazon; the appeal takes weeks and the reseller won’t refund. The gate was doing exactly what it was built to do.
💡 Harpy tip. Before buying one unit of any product you haven’t listed before, search Seller Central for its category requirements. The check takes minutes; the mistake costs seasons.
