Brand Gating

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

Brand Gating is the enforcement layer that stops unauthorized sellers from listing under a brand — sellers must apply (and pay per-brand approval fees) to sell gated branded products, and only the brand’s permission or genuine-invoice wholesale chains get through.

What is Brand Gating?

Brand Gating is the enforcement layer that stops unauthorized sellers from listing under a brand — sellers must apply (and pay per-brand approval fees) to sell gated branded products, and only the brand’s permission or genuine-invoice wholesale chains get through.

For brand owners, gating is the moat against the reseller swarm: the arbitrage accounts and counterfeit-adjacent listings that tank your Buy Box share and price integrity. For resellers, it’s the locked door — which is precisely its value to the people inside the castle.

What gating actually protects (and doesn’t)

Gating protects the listing landscape: fewer undercutting resellers, more stable Buy Box share, cleaner price presentation across the marketplace. It doesn’t stop counterfeits by itself (those need Brand Registry’s protection tools and rights-owner enforcement) and it doesn’t substitute for MAP discipline outside Amazon. The full stack for a serious brand: trademark → Brand Registry (tools and enforcement) → gating application (the moat) → monitoring (because determined resellers test walls). Each layer handles a different threat; sellers who skip layers get the threats that layer would have caught.

The brand-side application reality

Brand owners apply for gating through Amazon’s brand-protection channels; approval asks for evidence of the brand’s enforcement posture — and Amazon’s deliberateness is the point: gating is granted to brands that look like they’ll use it. The reseller side is where fees live (per-brand approval applications, with invoices proving legitimate sourcing — the mechanism that filters out the arbitrage swarm). Timeline expectations: weeks to months; the moat is built slowly, which is partly why it’s worth having.

In practice

A supplement brand spends a quarter building its protection stack: trademark registered, Brand Registry enrolled, gating approved, unauthorized-seller monitoring live. The resellers who had been selling its products 15% under MAP get removed through enforcement, Buy Box share stabilizes near 100%, and the brand’s price presentation stops collapsing every arbitrage season. Margins recover — protected, not discounted, back to health.

⚠️ Watch out. A brand assumes Brand Registry IS gating — enrolls the trademark, considers the matter closed, and watches unauthorized resellers keep listing (Registry gives tools; gating is the wall). Eighteen months of price erosion and Buy Box splits pass before the difference gets sorted. Two processes, one afternoon of applications, very different protections.
💡 Harpy tip. If you own the brand: trademark → Brand Registry → gating, in that order, started as early as possible — the moat compounds like everything else on Amazon, and un-gated brands teach arbitrage sellers their listing is a food court.

How Harpy Media helps

Brand protection stacks are core setup work for our brand clients — registry, gating, enforcement, monitoring. Your listing should be your storefront, not everyone’s clearance aisle.

What is brand gating on Amazon?

Restrictions preventing unauthorized sellers from listing a brand’s products — resellers need approval (and fees) to sell gated brands.

How does a brand owner get their brand gated?

Through Amazon’s brand-protection application process — typically after Brand Registry enrollment, with evidence of trademark rights and enforcement posture.
