ODR (Order Defect Rate)
ODR (Order Defect Rate) is the share of orders that generated a negative customer experience, measured over a rolling 60-day window. Amazon counts three kinds of defect: negative seller feedback, A-to-z Guarantee claims, and credit card chargebacks.
What is ODR?
ODR (Order Defect Rate) is the share of orders that generated a negative customer experience, measured over a rolling 60-day window. Amazon counts three kinds of defect: negative seller feedback, A-to-z Guarantee claims, and credit card chargebacks.
It is one of the metrics on which an account lives or dies. The threshold is 1% — and it applies across all orders, so in a low-volume month a handful of defects can move the percentage sharply. Crossing it damages account health, threatens Buy Box eligibility, and in serious or persistent cases suspends selling privileges outright.
Why the 60-day window matters
The rolling window cuts both ways, and understanding it changes how you respond. A short-term problem — a carrier failure, a batch defect — does not permanently scar the account: as the defective orders age out of the 60-day period, the rate recovers if the underlying issue is fixed. But by the same arithmetic, defect volume from six weeks ago is still weighing on today’s number, so patience is not a strategy; correction is.
The low-volume trap is worth naming. A seller shipping 40 orders in a window needs to avoid even a single defect to stay comfortably under 1% — one A-to-z claim is 2.5%. That is why small sellers must be especially disciplined on service: their percentages are far more sensitive to individual events than a high-volume account’s.
Prevention is cheaper than the appeal
Most defects originate in a small set of causes, all of them addressable. Late or untracked deliveries: dispatch on time, keep tracking valid, and where a delay is happening, get ahead of it with the customer. Product problems: returns and complaints are the early signals, and fixing the specification or listing accuracy stops the defect supply at source. Communication failures: a customer who hears from you is far less likely to file a claim than one who is ignored.
Then the recovery plays. Where a delay is your carrier’s fault, proactive contact — honest explanation, tracking, and where appropriate a goodwill gesture — routinely keeps a frustrated buyer out of the formal claim process. A claim that is never filed is a defect that never counts.
In practice
A seller’s carrier misplaces twenty parcels in a peak-season rush, extending deliveries by a week. The seller works the messaging queue continuously: every worried customer gets a reply within hours, with tracking detail and a goodwill refund for the delay. Because the brand communicated before the customers escalated, no formal claims get filed — and the ODR holds at a safe fraction of a percent despite a genuinely bad week.
How Harpy Media helps
Account health monitoring is a standing item in our reporting: ODR components reviewed monthly, defect reasons assigned to causes, and response protocols built so a problem in the network does not become a problem on the account.
ODR FAQ
What counts towards Order Defect Rate?
Three signals over a rolling 60-day window: negative seller feedback (one or two stars), A-to-z Guarantee claims, and credit card chargebacks initiated by buyers. Each unique order counts once, even if several signals apply.
What is the ODR limit on Amazon?
The requirement is to keep ODR below 1%. Going above it puts account health at risk and can cost Buy Box eligibility or, with sustained breaches, selling privileges — which is why the metric sits under continuous review rather than periodic audit.
Can I get an ODR defect removed?
In some cases — for example where a claim was filed for an order that was delivered and the tracking proves it, or where the platform rule itself was applied incorrectly. The stronger position is always prevention: defects that never get filed cannot be counted.
