HCPO (High Confidence Purchase Order)

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

An HCPO (High Confidence Purchase Order) is a vendor PO Amazon issues when it’s genuinely confident the goods will sell: strong historical velocity, confirmed demand drivers (a promotion, a season, a launch), low current inventory, and clean sell-through data behind the order.

What is HCPO?

An HCPO (High Confidence Purchase Order) is a vendor PO Amazon issues when it’s genuinely confident the goods will sell: strong historical velocity, confirmed demand drivers (a promotion, a season, a launch), low current inventory, and clean sell-through data behind the order.

The name is the message: Amazon is telling the vendor this order isn’t a speculative warehouse bet — it’s demand it can already see. For vendors, HCPOs are the good kind of purchase order to receive: firm in volume and timing, typically tied to periods where sales will actually happen, and worth prioritising in production and logistics planning.

Why HCPOs exist (and how to read them)

Amazon operates procurement on confidence tiers: some orders are conservative guesses, some are data-backed commitments. HCPOs lean on the second kind — the retailer has visibility into demand (rank velocity, promotional plans, seasonal patterns) that suggests the stock will turn quickly. That gives vendors useful signals: an HCPO ahead of an event usually confirms the retailer is buying into that event seriously; an HCPO on a quiet SKU may mean the retailer spotted something (velocity data vendors can’t see) worth paying attention to; and the absence of HCPOs during a period you expected demand is itself information about how confident Amazon is in your line. Learning to read that pattern is part of operating a vendor account well.

Executing HCPOs (where vendor reputation is made)

Because HCPOs are firm and tied to demand windows, execution is where vendors earn retailer trust: confirm inside the window, produce and ship on time (the delivery dates matter — the stock was ordered to catch a specific wave), and communicate early if anything threatens the timeline (a proactive update beats a chargeback). The upside is direct: fulfilled HCPOs protect availability, keep rank and velocity flowing, and build the data case for MORE confident POs next season — the vendor’s reliability record feeds future order sizing. The mirror logic is worth internalising: HCPO reliability compounds into preferential buying; chronic misses compound into conservative buying. Vendors are paid for being easy to trust.

In practice

A vendor receives an HCPO in early autumn sized well above baseline for two ASINs, ahead of a seasonal event. Reading it as a signal, they treat the order as a production priority — factory slots booked immediately, freight options planned against the delivery date rather than the cheapest sailing, and the confirmation returned inside 48 hours. The event window sells through as Amazon projected; the next planning cycle, those ASINs receive visibly deeper orders. The reliability record had become purchasing confidence.

⚠️ Watch out. A vendor treats an HCPO like any other PO — standard queue position, standard freight booking, confirmation whenever the paperwork catches up. The order lands late for the window it was sized for, availability gaps damage the very rank data that generated the high-confidence signal, and next season’s orders arrive smaller. The order was a vote; the late delivery cost the vote.
💡 Harpy tip. When an HCPO arrives, read its delivery date as the whole point of the order. Book production and freight against that date first, then build everything else around it.

HCPO FAQ

What is an HCPO?

High Confidence Purchase Order — a vendor PO Amazon issues against strong demand evidence (velocity, promotions, low stock); firm in volume and timing.

How is an HCPO different from a normal PO?

It carries higher certainty of sell-through — backed by data rather than speculation — and is typically tied to specific demand windows.

Why do HCPOs matter to vendors?

They signal where the retailer sees real demand (valuable planning information) and they’re an opportunity to build the reliability record that earns deeper future orders.
