AVS (Amazon Vendor Services)

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

AVS (Amazon Vendor Services) is Amazon’s invitation-only premium support program for 1P vendors: a dedicated Brand Specialist — an Amazon employee assigned to your account — who works your catalog, operations, and marketing inside Amazon on your behalf.

What is AVS?

AVS (Amazon Vendor Services) is Amazon’s invitation-only premium support program for 1P vendors: a dedicated Brand Specialist — an Amazon employee assigned to your account — who works your catalog, operations, and marketing inside Amazon on your behalf.

It’s the vendor-side upgrade from ticket-based support to a human with a name: someone who can chase chargebacks, fix catalog data at the source, pull reporting levers, and advocate for your brand in internal priority queues. Access is negotiated (and paid for) — usually surfacing in AVN conversations.

What a Brand Specialist actually does

The value surface: catalog health (fixing the data issues that plague vendor listings — wrong categorizations, suppressed content, image defects), operational firefighting (chargeback disputes, shipment discrepancies, routing exceptions), marketing execution (deal scheduling, campaign coordination, content improvements), and intel (what’s coming in your category, how your PPM is tracking). The best specialists operate like an extension of your team; the value varies with the individual — which is the honest caveat of every AVS engagement.

Deciding if AVS pays

The math: AVS costs a negotiated fee (often a margin-relevant percentage or fixed retainer) and returns value in recovered chargebacks, catalog fixes that lift conversion, deal placements that move volume, and time. Vendors with large catalogs, chronic operational friction, or thin internal Amazon expertise usually clear the bar. Vendors with three SKUs and clean operations usually don’t. The evaluation discipline: track what the specialist recovered and moved for two quarters, then re-decide with numbers. Like every paid service: measurable return or renegotiate.

In practice

A mid-size vendor with 200+ ASINs and a chargeback problem takes AVS: the specialist audits their inbound compliance (labelling and ASN errors driving the fees), runs the dispute backlog, and lands two deal placements their team had failed to secure for a year. Recovered chargebacks plus incremental deal revenue exceed the AVS fee 3x in the first two quarters — and the compliance fixes stop the bleeding at source.

⚠️ Watch out. A vendor signs AVS for the status of ‘having someone at Amazon’ and then never briefs the specialist, never escalates through them, and reviews nothing. The retainer buys a name in an org chart while the vendor keeps losing the same chargebacks. Access without engagement is a donation.
💡 Harpy tip. If you run AVS, run it properly: a standing biweekly call, an owned issue list, and a quarterly value ledger (recovered, fixed, won). The program pays exactly as much attention as you demand.

How Harpy Media helps

We’ve worked both sides of the specialist relationship — we brief them, feed them issues, and hold the value ledger. Vendor programs pay when someone manages the manager.
