3PS (Third-Party Service)

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

A 3PS (Third-Party Service) is any external provider doing operational work for your Amazon business outside Amazon’s own ecosystem: logistics partners, software tools, tax compliance firms, reimbursement services, ad agencies. If it plugs a gap without joining your payroll, it’s a third-party service.

What is 3PS?

A 3PS (Third-Party Service) is any external provider doing operational work for your Amazon business outside Amazon’s own ecosystem: logistics partners, software tools, tax compliance firms, reimbursement services, ad agencies. If it plugs a gap without joining your payroll, it’s a third-party service.

Used well, a 3PS converts fixed overhead into variable cost and buys expertise you couldn’t afford in-house. Used badly, it’s a monthly fee doing nothing, or worse — a security incident. The test is the same one you’d apply to an employee: does it return more than it costs, measurably?

How to calculate whether a service is worth it

Every 3PS lives or dies on one number:

3PS ROI % = (net financial benefit − service fee) ÷ service fee × 100If a tool or agency can’t show its benefit in numbers — recovered funds, hours saved at a loaded rate, incremental margin — the ROI is negative by definition.

Where 3PS spending actually goes

FBA-heavy brands spend mostly upstream — 3PLs and prep centers that buffer stock against Amazon’s capacity limits. FBM and hybrid brands spend on fulfilment itself. Everyone eventually spends on software: repricers, keyword tools, reimbursement scanners, inventory forecasters. The pattern to watch is drift: services added in year one for a problem that year three’s volumes made obsolete, still quietly billing. Audit the stack annually like you audit deductions.

The security line you never cross

Amazon gives third-party apps a sanctioned connection path: the Selling Partner Appstore and SP-API authorizations with scoped permissions. Any provider asking for your master Seller Central login credentials is telling you exactly how they operate — and sharing that password voids seller protections and routinely triggers security suspensions. Revoke and walk away. Legitimate services never need your password; they need an authorization click.

In practice

A brand moving 3,000 units a month routes its entire ocean container to a domestic prep center instead of pushing 20 pallets straight into FBA. The provider inventories, inspects, and delivers 500-unit transfers on a schedule. Storage fees drop, compliance is bulletproof, and the per-unit prep cost is a known, planned number instead of an Amazon surcharge roulette.

⚠️ Watch out. A seller hires an unvetted freelance developer for a custom inventory tracker. The developer demands primary Seller Central credentials instead of using authorized API tokens. Amazon’s security systems flag the unauthorized access pattern and freeze the account — three weeks of peak-season sales gone, for a tool that duplicated a $50/month app.
💡 Harpy tip. Before onboarding any service, find the off-ramp: how data gets exported and how authorization gets revoked. Services that make leaving hard are telling you what the relationship is really worth.

3PS FAQ

Where do I find approved Amazon third-party services?

The Selling Partner Appstore for software and the Amazon Service Provider Network (SPN) inside Seller Central for agencies and service partners.

Are third-party tools allowed on Amazon?

Yes — when they connect through authorized API tokens and comply with Amazon’s Data Protection Policy. Password-sharing “integrations” are the violation, not the concept.

How do I revoke a third-party app’s access?

Seller Central → Partner Network → Manage Your Apps → Revoke. Do it the day a service ends; stale authorizations are pure risk.

Can a third-party service get my account suspended?

Yes — if it uses non-compliant scraping, flagged IPs, or your master credentials. Vet providers like employees; their behaviour is your liability.
