What is Sponsored Display?

Sponsored Display is a self-service advertising format that reaches audiences on and off the marketplace, targeted by shopping behaviour and product views rather than by keyword alone. Creative is generated automatically from the listing.

Its distinct contribution is audience logic. Search advertising competes for people who are already looking; display advertising reaches people based on what they have looked at, viewed, or bought — which extends the reachable audience beyond the moment of search and into browsing elsewhere.

What it is actually good at

Three jobs. Defending: showing your ads to shoppers who are viewing a competitor’s similar product, which keeps your option in front of them at the decision point. Recovering: re-reaching shoppers who viewed your listing and did not buy, where a second exposure often converts. And extending: reaching relevant audiences off the marketplace, which is reach a search campaign cannot buy.

Each of those uses a different targeting setup, and the format is at its weakest when used as a cheaper version of search advertising. It performs best where the audience definition is doing the work — a competitor set worth contesting, a retargeting window worth closing, an audience segment that maps to your product’s use case.

Managing the trade-offs

Two things need watching. Reach-based formats accumulate impressions quickly, so cost discipline has to come from active exclusion — audiences that convert poorly should be removed rather than left running because their click cost looks low. And the automatically generated creative means the listing itself is doing the persuading, which puts the quality of images and content back at the centre of performance.

Attribution is the other consideration: display advertising drives sales that arrive later and less directly than search, so a strict last-click view understates it. The judgement should be at account level — whether total sales moved when the activity started — rather than by comparing it to search campaign reporting on equal terms.

In practice

A brand runs display campaigns against a defined set of competitor products and a retargeting audience of recent viewers, excluding segments that fail to convert within a month. Two of the three campaigns produce a return that search advertising on the same terms could not reach, and account-level sales rise while search efficiency holds.

⚠️ Watch out. Judging it like search. A seller compares its display return against its best-performing keyword campaign, concludes the format is unprofitable, and stops — having measured reach advertising as though it were acquisition advertising. The channel is then judged on the metric it is worst suited to.
💡 Harpy tip. Choose the job first — defend, recover, or extend — and set targeting to match. Prune unproductive audiences actively, since impressions accumulate quickly, and assess the format at account level rather than against search campaigns.

How Harpy Media helps

Audience advertising is part of our growth mix: display used for the jobs search cannot do, targeting built around competitor sets and viewership windows, and results judged at account level.

Sponsored Display FAQ

What is Sponsored Display?

A self-service advertising format that reaches audiences on and off the marketplace based on shopping behaviour and product views — targeted by audience rather than by keyword.

How is it different from Sponsored Products?

Search advertising competes for active queries; display advertising reaches people based on what they have viewed or bought. That extends reachable demand beyond the search moment.

Why does it look less efficient?

Because it works differently: it drives sales that arrive later and less directly, so last-click comparison against search understates its contribution. Judge it at account level.
