What is SP?

SP (Sponsored Products) is the advertising format that promotes individual product listings in search results and on product pages, charged on a cost-per-click basis and targeted by keyword or product.

It is the workhorse of marketplace advertising: the most direct way to buy visibility for a specific product, and the format most sellers start with. Its simplicity is also its trap — the mechanics are easy to begin and the returns depend entirely on how well the campaign structure separates intent and how disciplined the pruning is.

What makes it work

Three inputs decide performance: the bid you are willing to pay, the relevance of the listing to the search, and how well the page converts once the click arrives. Relevance and conversion both lower the effective cost of placement, which is why the most valuable optimisation is usually on the detail page rather than in the bid field.

Structure then decides how well you can manage it. Separating campaigns by intent — exact-match terms you know convert, discovery terms you are testing, defensive terms around your own brand — lets each be judged and funded on its own terms. A single campaign containing everything produces an average that describes nothing and cannot be optimised in any direction.

Managing it as a system

The loop: harvest converting search terms into exact campaigns where they can be bid precisely; negate the terms that spend without converting so the budget stops finding them; and review regularly enough that both movements happen while the data is still current. Efficiency comes from what you exclude more than from what you bid.

And judge it against margin rather than vanity. The measure that matters is advertising cost relative to the contribution the sale produces, which is a per-product figure rather than a single house target. Campaigns that meet their product’s threshold get scaled; those that do not get fixed or cut.

ACOS = (Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Ad Sales) × 100Judge it against each product’s margin, not against a single account-wide target.

In practice

A seller structures campaigns by intent, keeps exact-match terms for the queries that consistently convert, and reviews search terms weekly to harvest winners and negate waste. Advertising efficiency holds while visibility is maintained — the campaigns stay lean because the budget is not funding discoveries that were never going to buy.

⚠️ Watch out. One campaign for everything. A seller runs broad and automatic targeting alongside branded terms in a single campaign, cannot tell which element is performing, and reviews only the account average. The report looks acceptable; underneath it, some keywords are excellent and others are burning budget, and neither can be seen from the aggregate.
💡 Harpy tip. Separate by intent so each campaign can be judged, and work the search-term report weekly in both directions — harvest and negate. Improve the detail page as well as the bids: relevance and conversion lower the price you pay for every click.

How Harpy Media helps

Advertising structure is part of our growth work: campaigns separated by intent, budgets allocated against per-product thresholds, and the harvesting and negating loop run on a weekly rhythm.

SP FAQ

What are Sponsored Products?

Cost-per-click advertising that promotes individual listings in search results and on product pages, targeted by keyword or product — the core format for driving visibility to specific products.

How is performance measured?

Primarily by advertising cost of sales against the product’s margin, alongside click-through and conversion. A campaign is working if its cost leaves an acceptable contribution on the sale.

What is the biggest improvement lever?

Campaign structure. Separating terms by intent makes each element measurable, which then allows the harvesting of converting search terms and the negation of waste to work as intended.
