SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Amazon & D2C glossary · Harpy Media

SEO is the work of earning unpaid visibility in a search engine’s results. On a marketplace it means giving the ranking system the signals it weighs — relevance to the query, and evidence that shoppers who arrive through it buy.

What is SEO?

SEO is the work of earning unpaid visibility in a search engine’s results. On a marketplace it means giving the ranking system the signals it weighs — relevance to the query, and evidence that shoppers who arrive through it buy.

It is close to conversion optimisation wearing a different hat. The ranking system learns from behaviour, so what improves a listing’s chance of ranking and what improves its chance of selling are largely the same work. Pages that convert well get shown more; pages that get shown more, convert more. It compounds.

Where the ranking signals actually come from

Every query resolves to a set of terms the system treats as related, and the listing either matches them credibly or does not. So relevance starts with being genuinely correct about what the product is: the right terms in the places that carry weight, and descriptive content that answers what a shopper searching that phrase wants to know.

Then sales evidence enters. A listing that converts and sells steadily is ranked more strongly, which is why advertising has a strategic as well as an immediate use — it can start the sales history a new listing has not yet earned. Review volume and rating feed the same loop by reassuring the next shopper.

What actually moves the needle

Three levers, in order of leverage. First, coverage: the terms you are eligible for and currently win nothing on. Second, conversion: the arrival of the traffic you already have to a page that persuades. Third, the widening of the term set through content that earns relevance for adjacent queries.

Where optimisation goes wrong is treating it as a one-off. Rank decays as competitors optimise, seasonality shifts demand, and the system updates. The winning posture is a standing review cadence tied to the search terms that actually drive the category — small, frequent adjustments rather than a project that concludes.

In practice

A brand builds listings around researched terms with descriptions that answer the questions behind them, improves the images that carry most of the conversion weight, then runs modest advertising to build sales history on chosen queries. Rank accumulates query by query, and monthly reviews adjust as the term landscape shifts.

⚠️ Watch out. Optimising once and moving on. A seller rewrites every listing in a burst, sees improvement, and does not revisit. Six months later competitors have improved and the seasonal demand pattern has moved the category’s terms, but the listings still target the queries that mattered when they were written.
💡 Harpy tip. Treat it as conversion work first — relevance gets you shown, and the purchase decision keeps you there. Then work it as a standing rhythm: coverage gaps, conversion rate, and a widening term set, reviewed monthly against the terms shoppers actually use.

How Harpy Media helps

Organic visibility is part of our growth work: focused on the queries that drive the category’s sales, improved alongside conversion rather than separately, and held through a review cadence rather than a one-off project.

SEO FAQ

What is SEO on a marketplace?

The practice of earning organic visibility in search results by making a listing relevant to the queries that matter and converting well when shoppers arrive.

Is it the same as Google SEO?

The principles overlap but the signals differ: on a marketplace, purchase behaviour feeds ranking much more directly, which brings it closer to conversion optimisation.

How long does it take to work?

Improvement shows in weeks for relevance changes; ranking rises build over months as sales evidence accumulates. It is a compounding exercise, not a switch.
